Ghanaian native and Bronx, NY resident, Joshua Clottey (36-4), whom is coming off a decision loss to Manny Pacquaio(50-3-2), looked impressive in his comeback fight against Calvin Green (21-6-1), which was streamed live on toprank.com. Clottey has been out of the ring for approximately a year as his loss to Pacquaio was highly disappointing because he was not active in the fight and did not seem as if he really tried to win the fight.
However, Clottey looked more active in this fight and caught Green with a left hook in the second round that sent Green to the canvas and unable to answer the referee’s count. With the victory, Clottey keeps his status amongst the top contenders in the welterweight to middleweight division.
As for the future, Clottey must use this positive momentum he has created and stay active. Top Rank, whom serves as Clottey’s promotional team, must keep him active and in the public eye as his next fight should be televised either on HBO or Showtime in order to create some public buzz that Clottey is a competitor that can be entertaining. There are many opportunities for high caliber fights within the welterweight to middleweight divisions with the biggest names of all, Pacquaio and Mayweather, in his class. I don’t suspect Clottey will get a chance to fight either Pacquaio or Mayweather, but any other opponent is very possible such as a rematch with Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Sual Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and any of the top contenders in his weight class.
With the definitive victory, the door is wide open for Clottey and his team to choose which direction they want to take his career. The timing could not be better to be in the welterweight to middleweight division as there are many names to contend with that present big payday fights. No one can count Clottey out yet as this victory showed he could be a problem for anyone that he challenges.
