Anderlecht’s Frank Acheampong played 45 minutes and contributed the decisive assist as his side beat Sporting Charleroi 1-0 in their first match of the Belgian play-offs.

After finishing in third place in the regular Jupiler League season, the Purple and White qualified for the six-team championship play-offs.

Anderlecht secured 57 points from 30 matches during the campaign, and ended the regular season four points behind leaders Club Brugge and tied with second-placed Gent.

The team’s points were halved (and rounded up) before the start of the play-off, meaning the Brussels club have 32 points after the first of 12 play-off matches.

Besnik Hasi’s side won 1-0 after a 63rd-minute effort from Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. The victory was an important fillip for the 33-time Belgian first division champions, who lost the Belgian Cup final 2-1 to bitter rivals Club Brugge at the end of March.

Frank Acheampong didn’t start the game, but was brought on at half-time when he replaced Guinean wideman Ibrahima Conte.

The Black Star contributed the cross for Mitrovic’s goal having been played in by Dennis Praet.

The clash with Charleroi was Acheampong’s first match back in action since the international break, where he was one of Avram Grant’s key performers.

The former Buriram United man started the first friendly against Senegal, and starred despite being played out of position at left-back.
