The rapid decline in the patronage of the Ghana Premier League and other local competitions by the youth and the sudden love for foreign football has become a major headache for stakeholders and some state leaders in the past decade.

Though the Kurt Okraku led GFA has tried to revive the interest with the #BringBackTheLove mantra, they still have a long mountain to climb before the Ghana Premier League will overshadow the penetration of the European leagues like in the early 2000s.

This week, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong said the lost interest in the Ghana Premier League and other local club competitions should be attributed to the sports media or sports journalists in the country.

According to the lawmaker, he blames the sports media for the decline in the patronage for the local game because they spend all their time and use all the resources available to them to promote the European leagues at the expense of the Ghana Premier League.

Kennedy Agyapong added that it saddens his heart to see and hear Ghanaians who pride themselves as loyal fans of foreign clubs like Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal and other notable clubs in Europe.

There are others who also blame the sports media for using their medium to propagate negative news about the local league resulting in the rapid decline in the patronage of the Ghana Premier League.

Today on GhanaWeb Friday debate, we seek your opinion on whether you agree with Kennedy Agyapong’s statement that the sports media has contributed immensely to the lost interest for the local leagues.
