GAA scholarship for Frimpong

Ghanaian junior athlete, Felicia Frimpong has become the 18th national athlete to take up a Ghana Athletics Association sourced scholarship at the prestigious South Plains College in Texas, USA.

The youngster has been on the national radar since placing fourth in the triple jump at the 2014 African Youth Games in Botswana.

The promising national junior athlete will be seeking to further her education and enhance her career, while also honing her athletics skills at South Plains, who are the reigning men’s and women’s 2015 NJCAA Outdoor National Champions in the USA.

Frimpong, who placed overall third in the long jump at the recent Interplast-Sea & Shore National Circuit Championships, arrived at her new school last Tuesday (August 25) from Accra to begin her new adventure.

A long jump and sprint specialist, she helped her former school, Wesley Girl’s Senior High School in Kumasi, to win the girl’s 2015 Ashanti Region Inter School’s Track and Field championship earlier this year by running in the sprints and the 4x100m relay.

She has enjoyed a progressive outdoor season this year, competing at the GAA National Open Championships and the Interplast-Sea & Shore National Circuit, after completing her WASSCE Exams in May.

She punched above her weight to place a respectable overall 3rd at the Circuit Grand Finale in Tamale, on August 8.

The latest development marks a continuation of the GAA’s drive to secure the future of some of the nation’s most talented athletes by sending them to Universities in the USA on student-athletic scholarships.

Prior to Felicia Frimpong’s scholarship, 17 other Ghanaian athletes had benefitted from the initiative by the Prof. Francis Dodoo led GAA administration between 2013 and 2015.
