GAABA, AMA boxing show to honour Atta Mills

The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) are organising a boxing show on the streets of Ghana’s boxing hub, Bukom in Accra on Thursday night to celebrate the funeral of deceased President John Atta Mills.

The late Atta Mills was a staunch sports enthusiast who played hockey and soccer during his school days and according to Hon. Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme, Acting Chairman of GAABA, over ten bouts will be fought by amateurs and juveniles on Thursday night to mark the wake-keeping as Ghana mourns the departed President who will be buried on Friday. Accordingly, boxing enthusiasts and Assembly members of AMA and Ghanaians at large are expected to grace the event scheduled to take place in-between Salaga market and Bukom Park near the Gbese Mantse’s palace.

“The President was an honest, humble and hardworking man who had time for everybody. Maybe he didn’t personally get involved in boxing as he did other sports, but we appreciate the support his administration has given,” said Hon. Tackie-Komme who as Assemblyman for Shiabu Electoral Area is also the Chairman of AMA’s sub-committee on Youth and Sports.

He added: “I can tell you that the AMA under him have secured a piece of land to construct a boxing arena. We appreciate it and we want to do our wake keeping for him in the ring. It’s the least we can do.”
