The chairman of the Parliamentary select committee on Youth and Sports, Hon. Alex Agyekum says he disagrees with anyone who says the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is autonomous.
Speaking to OTEC FM Royal Sports, the NPP Member of Parliament for Mpohor Constituency in the western region Hon. Kofi Agyekum explained that the GFA cannot do whatever it wants in the name of autonomy.
"So long as all national teams are being budgeted for and finance by the government every year, I don't agree with anyone who says the GFA is autonomous. They can be autonomous in some way by FIFA rules, but, they can't be totally independent as far as the government still has handed in all national team assignments", Hon. Agyekum said.
Hon. Alex Kofi Agyekum also revealed that the 2016/17 budget allocation for sports was used to clear debts at the national sports authority and the various national stadia.
"How is our sports stadia in debt for the past years, it only takes 2016/2017 sports budget to settle all electricity and water bills around the various centres. How can debt of our stadia be more than the year's budget?", Hon. Agyekum asked.
Hon. Agyekum concluded that football in Ghana will improve if proper management and structure are put in place at the GFA.
