West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Champions, Ghapoha readers started the league on a bright note when they beat defending champions, Accra Hearts of Oak 1-0 in their match played at Tema. After observing a minute silence in memory of the late Shamo Quaye, former player of hearts, both teams went into action but Hearts, who were slightly on top, missed a first minute scoring chance when centre forward Joe Fameyeh fumbled in front of goal. Still fighting for the opener, Fameyeh, who switched camp from Afienya United to Hearts this season, was a thorn in the flesh of Ghapoha repulsed the attack and earned their first cornerkick in the 30th minute. This nearly resulted into a goal when right full back Amankwaah Mireku cleared centre forward Isaac Boakye's shop from the goal line. The game from then on became a ding-going affair as both teams continued to squander scoring chances. Back from recess, Ghapoha, determined to beat their opponents, redoubled their effort and speedster Dan Edusei, who combined effectively with inside left Awudu Adama, scored the only goal in the 55th minute. Soon after the goal, Hearts brought in Justice Ampah and Olaya Lukeman for central defender Tony Yeboah and inside left Ibrahim Mugu but the changes did not help them as the defence of Ghapoha, pivoted around Richard Darko, Alex Awuah and Michael Mensah, held them in check. Ten minutes to full time, disaster struck Ghapoha' camp as their inside left Ben Kwame was shown the red card for dissent but the Phobians could not use their numerical advantage to score. GRi
