GNA Chapter Of GJA Condems Attack On Journalist

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the recent attack on Ms Veronica Commey by Mr Sylvester Mensah and Ms Helena Cobbinah, both Chairman and Deputy of the Management Committee of the Black Queens.

The Chapter finds it rather disappointing that in this day and age Journalists could be attacked and insulted by public officials just for doing their official duties.

Indeed, the action by the two officials is not only disappointing, but also disgusting as it brings them out as persons who do not know the workings of journalism.

The Chapter wishes to put it on record that Ms Commey did not do anything wrong by writing the truth about the events and the way they came about at the just ended Women's World Football Tournament in the United States.

If the two officials had anything against the said reportage, it was just right to come out with a rejoinder to which the Ghana News Agency like all other media houses are enjoined by the 1992 Constitution to carry.

The Chapter wishes to state that it is, and has always been, very sensitive to the practice of social responsibility, professional integrity and respect for the privacy and human dignity as pertains in the GJA Code of Ethics.

We have always sought to ensure that no one is injured in anyway by our publications and where we have done so; we have bee quick to correct and render the necessary apology.

The Chapter would like to remind the two officials that the good people of Ghana have the right to TRUE INFORMATION, which is the duty of every single journalist, a duty Ms Commey was undertaking wholeheartedly in the case under review.

Signed

Gideon Sackitey (Ag Secretary)
