General Manager-Sustainability at Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Dr Kwame Baah Nuakoh has revealed the reasons for the outfit's decision to cancel its sponsorship for the Black Stars.
The state-owned oil exploration firm has re-directed its focus on building infrastructure for the sport.
GNPC Foundation have provided funds for the construction of an artificial pitch at Bekwai SDA Senior High School in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The oil exploration firm say it's not financially viable to continue its financial obligation to the national team.
GNPC's decision to pump a staggering $3million into the Black Stars annually sparked controversy in the West African nation.
And General Manager-Sustainability Dr Kwame Baah Nuakoh has revealed his outfit's decision to terminate its contract with the Ghana FA.
“We are now doing projects with long-term returns. We are using the money to build football pitches to develop more players, this is something monumental for future generations to benefit,” he told Happy FM
“We needed to rethink, we want the future generations to know what we used the oil money for. We will construct artificial pitches all over Ghana.”
This is one of six of such projects to be done in this year.
Another one will be done at Asokwa in Kumasi. Two will be done in the Western Region, Effia Kuma in Takoradi and Tarkwa T & A.
One is earmarked for Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region whilst Koforidua in the Eastern Region will be one of the early beneficiaries. The Foundation plans to do six (6) artificial turfs every year for the next four years.
GNPC had been sponsoring the Black Stars for the last five years and provided a reported $ 3 million dollar annual support.
The Black Stars is regarded as one of the most lucrative entities to invest in and command a huge interest in the sponsorship kitty.
