GOC to hold elections in July

Accra, May 17, GNA - The much awaited election of Executives of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) might finally see the light of day in July this year.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Clement Kofi Humado told GNA Sports that the GOC elections might come off latest by the end of July, all things being equal.

Mr Humado said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will send down emissaries after the passage of the country's Sports Bill to assist and supervise the election of new Executives of the GOC.

"The GOC election has been tentatively fixed for end of June or July. It is the responsibility of the IOC."

Mr Humado expressed conviction that the IOC will finally lift Ghana's suspension at its 123rd Session and Executive Board meeting to be held from 4-9 July, 2011 in Durban, South Africa.

The Minister said his outfit is working round the clock to ensure the passage of the Sports Bill by Parliament, which would facilitate the annulling of the suspension.

The IOC annulled the last GOC election held in June 2009 citing improper conduct by some officials.

The aftermath of the election was key in the suspension of the GOC by the global body last January, citing Governmental interference in the activities of the GOC.
