Former Ghana Football Association Vice President, George Akwasi Afriyie, today visited the Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu to seek for his blessings, guidance and counsel ahead of the 2019 GFA elections set for October 25.

The experienced football administrator believes while it is true that the Chief Imam may not have a direct vote during the election, his influence, blessings and guidance will be key to his aspirations of assuming the highest office of Ghana football.

The Chief Imam blessed Mr Afriyie, and admonished him to run a clean campaign.

George Afriyie has over the last couple of weeks embarked on a charm offensive, persuading those who matter and will vote on the D-Day that he is the best person to lead Ghana football in the aftermath of the scandalous Number 12 documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas last year.

Loyalists of George Afriyie believe their candidate has amassed valuable lessons while serving in different roles at the Football Association.

George has in the past served on the prestigious Executive Committee, served as Black Stars Management Committee Chairman and also served as Vice President to Kwesi Nyantakyi before he was removed his post last year.

The Liberty Professionals chief last year revealed his plans to replace Kwesi Nyantakyi during his 50th birthday celebrations.

Various people of high standing in society and in the football fraternity were in attendance during the event when Afriyie declared his intention.
“For the last few months I have had a thought and the question regarding whether I will be contesting for the FA presidency in 2019 following the public disclosure of my boss Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi that he will not be contesting in the next election," Afriyie told the gathering.

“Mr Chairman I would like to use the memorable occasion to announce my intention to take part in 2019 GFA Presidential election.''

“Following extensive consultation with all the relevant stakeholders and in the coming days I will be putting out my vision for Ghana football."

Mr Afriyie is expected to face competition from other astute candidates such as Fred Papoe, Kurt Okraku, Nana Yaw Amponsah and Wilfred Kwaku Osei Palmer.
