Ghana@50: Street Academy face Old Stars

Accra, Feb. 28, GNA - As part of activities marking Ghana's 5oth anniversary, the Street Academy football team will engage the Accra Old Stars Club in a friendly football match on Saturday, March 10. The Accra Old Stars club is made up of retired players of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Republicans, Hearts of Oak, Great Olympics and Standfast whilst the Street Academy's team is made up of the products currently plying their trade with clubs like Olympics, Hearts and Abedi Pele's Nania FC and the current pupils. The friendly match which is scheduled for the Accra Hearts of Oak training grounds near the Arts Centre in Accra promises a lot of excitement by the oldies and the youngsters with kick off coming at 8.00am.

Mr Dan Asiedu Asare, Managing Director of Sportnet early this year donated a magnificent trophy for the match.

He said the decision to support the event is to bring back the fond memories of the soccer exploits of the former football stars before and after independence as they compete with the youth of today. The Managing Director expressed the hope that the experience of the old players would come to bear on the young and upcoming players to be dedicated to training through selflessness, dedication and discipline. Mr Asare therefore called on the sports loving public to take keen interest in the event since it would afford them the opportunity of sharing and interacting with the old stars in their retirement. F.M. Kofi Bruce, President of the Accra Old Stars threw a challenge to the products of the Academy to gird their loins for a match of their lives since the members are prepared to show-case their experience and skills acquired over the years 93to teach the latest generation a soccer lesson on the match day".

He said the Old Stars agreed to engage the youngsters so as to encourage them to be devoted and be serious at their training by exhibiting a sense of discipline which they practiced during their football days.

Kofi Bruce said the club has some members including Billy Tagoe, coach of the Club, Addo Allotey and Moses Lartey, past players of Hearts, Black Stars, Republicans and Olympics. The oldies said they were confident of exhibiting their brand of football to mesmerize their opponents and were sure of carrying the day with a sound victory. 28 Feb. 07
