The communications director of the Ghana Football Association, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has revealed that Black Stars coach Avram Grant is currently in talks with Spain U-21 striker Inaki Williams over a possible nationality switch.
The Athletic Bilbao forward has been in impressive form since the close of the 2014-2015 season.
The 21-year-old grabbed global attention ahead of the Fifa international break, netting five times in three matches within a span of eight days – two La Liga matches and a Europa League tie.
“I can tell you for a fact that he [Williams] has been in contact with coach Avram Grant,” Daara was quoted as saying by footy-Ghana.
“I don’t know how far they’ve gone but I think they are at the preliminary stages.
“When players are about to make these decisions, they need a lot of thinking and time to consult families and things like that.
“So it will take time but we’re confident.”
In March, Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi revealed that the youngster had attracted the attention of handlers of the Black Stars and that moves were underway to convince him for a nationality switch.
Born to a Ghanaian father and a Liberian mother in Basque, Spain, Williams, has netted four times in six league appearances this season.
On Thursday, the striker found the back of the net in Spain U-21s’ 5-0 win over Georgia.
