Ghana Meet Nigeria In Match-play

A contingent of 50 golfers from Achimota Golf Club will feature in a match-play
against the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja from October 1-2. The
match-play, according to the captain of IBB Club Abuja, Prof Bola Afolabi is part of
the activities to commemorate the Golden Jubilee activities of Nigeria.
Afolabi, who said the visit by the Ghanaians is a reciprocal gesture, is of the
believe that the event can only strengthen the relationship between both countries.
The same courtesy is repeated by the IBB Club during the period of the national day
celebration of Ghana in March. Achimota has strong golf ties with two other Nigerian
clubs, Ikoyi Club 1938 and St Mark Golf Club, Otukpo.
The international match-play is one of the series of events lined up by IBB Golf and
Country Club to celebrate Nigeria’s attainment of the 50 years of nationhood. The
events of Nigeria @ 50 golf tournaments teed off on Saturday with the ladies closed
event that paraded a field of 100 female golfers.
The series of tournaments came into real life Tuesday when an invited field of
international professional golfers from Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal
and Ghana began competing for a four-round event with a purse of N6m.
The pro fee for the tournament is being redeemed by the Federal Government Committee
on Nigeria @ 50. A 54–hole open amateur tournament, also at the expense of the
Federal Government, is on the card for September 25-26.
However, the biggest of them all in the series is the Presidency, National Assembly
and Diplomatic Community Golf Tournament on September 30. It will draw participation
from eminent members of the society as well as royal fathers.
