SAFA Western Province is bidding for the world cup qualifier match between Bafana and Blackstars scheduled for 18 june 2005,to be staged in Cape Town.
SAFA NEC awarded the game involving Uganda to Cape Town but the SAFA administration took the match to Johannesburg.A lot of basic planning went into the match with everything organised when it was announced, the match will only take place in Johannesburg apparently because Southern Sun hotels were overbook for the easter weekend.
SAFA has official policy that Bafana matches must be played all over the country to ensure as many people as posible to get to see the national team live in action.
Over the last 7 years,Bafana has only played twice in Cape Town, with the last time being 3 years ago.Durban and Bloemfontein have been seeing Bafana action.
"we strongly believe that the Bafana supporters in the Western Cape should be treated fairly and be given the same opportunity as other provinces,"according to SAFA Western Province.
" The weather conditions projected for june 18 are cold and overcast with some showers, which will be perfectly suitable for our team, given that most of the Bafana players are based in Europe and play in similar conditions during the Europian seasons.
"Furthemore if the game is play in the evening,Bafana will have some advantage over Ghana. We have embarked upon a marketing strategy to ensure that we have a packed stadium.
Each of our 36 football associations have been requested to secure at least 1,000 names of the people who will purchase a ticket for the match. Each of our districts have at least 2,000 members with or total membership being 80,000. " We have submitted our proposal to SAFA,and we are awaiting their positive response".
According to SAFA Western Province general secretary-Mxolisi Zondi, there are many people from Cape Town who have never seen former Cape based Bafana stars like Bennie McCarthy,Shaun Bartlett,Nasief Morris and Quinton Fortune play for Bafana in the Cape Town live so part of their campaign will be dubbed the "HOMECOMING OF THE BAFANA BAFANA BOYS".
