Head Coach of the Nigeria Super Falcons Florence Omagbemi has heaped praise on the Black Queens of Ghana for holding her side to a pulsating 1-1 draw in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nation second Group B match played on Wednesday.
The match which was played in Limbe, did not see the Super Falcons as sleek as they were in their opening 6-0 win over Mali but were rather subdued by a resilient and determined Ghana side.
The defending champions looking for a win to book an early ticket to the semi-finals had a great start and they got into the lead in the 19th minute when Cynthia Adobia turned Asisat Oshoala’s shot into her own net.
Ghana however equalized from the spot five minutes to the break through skipper Elizabeth Addo, who was fouled by Halimat Ayinde in the vital area.
The impressive performance of the Black Queens earned them all the praise from the opposing coach Omagbemi.
“The game was great and both teams played well. Ghana gave us a good match and it was an impressive game.”
“We were not over confident after the 6-0 victory over Mali. Today, we played against a good team and it was a good match by both teams. A draw (1-1) is not a bad result. We played well and were not expecting to draw.” She said.
Nigeria now needs to convincingly beat Kenya in their final group match to assure themselves of the top spot.
Ghana play Mali in their final match also on Saturday in Yaounde and they will also hope to win by a convincing margin as they are currently second in the group with an inferior goal difference.
