Ghana has excelled in women football

Ghana Football Association president Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi has extolled the achievements of the various female national teams and women’s football in general despite the many difficulties that confront them and the GFA.

Nyantakyi made these statements on the third and final day of his appearance at the Commission of Enquiry investigating into the 2014 World Cup appearance of Ghana.

The GFA has been questioned on the level of attention that it gives to the development of women football over the years compared to the male national teams, but Mr. Nyantakyi told the presidential Commission of Inquiry into the 2014 World Cup that though women football is relatively young both globally and in Ghana and thus has low patronage, the various national teams have chalked many successes in all competitions.

“My Lord, on women football, Ghana has made a lot strides in women football though we admit there is still need to pay more attention to women football because of its special needs. The Black Queens went to the World Cup even before the Black Stars qualified and have been there a couple of times.

The Under 17 female team have qualified to every FIFA competition for that category and the Under 20 and Black Queens have been to almost all CAF and FIFA competitions”., he recalled.

Nyantakyi also touched on the local women’s game.

"Though there is no sponsorship for the Women’s game, for the first time, we have a well structured women’s league and that is positive”, he said.

Nyantakyi however called on women in leadership positions to come to the aid of these female national teams considering the support that they still need.

“Parliamentarians, ministers and women in positions of trust should come on board to help these women teams. It is not only the state but I think they can all come on board to assist the development of women football.

They shouldn’t only come around when the team goes to competitions and come back with success”, Mr. Nyantakyi reiterated.
