Ghana seek to extract measure of revenge

Asante Kotoko will be out to avenge Ghana's Nations Cup humiliation when they take on Rwanda's APR FC in the first leg of their African Cup Winners Cup quarter-final tie in Kumasi on Sunday.

Ghana are still smarting over their upset by rank outsiders Rwanda in the African Nations Cup qualifiers in July when the tiny east African country secured a place in the finals for the first time.

Kotoko can now seek retribution against the army club, who are the first side from Rwanda to make the last eight of a continental club competition.

Many of Rwanda players who took part in the 1-0 defeat of Ghana in Kigali will be in the APR FC line-up, including match winner Jimmy Gatete.

Kotoko, top of the Ghanaian premier league, are seeking a second successive appearance in the Cup Winners Cup final after their narrow defeat by Wydad Casablanca last year.

Wydad continue their defence of the title with a tricky trip to Zambia to meet Power Dynamos in Kitwe on Saturday.

Dynamos welcome back Francis Kombe to their line-up after he missed their last league match and look to the goal-scoring form of John Lomani.

Two former winners meet in Abidjan at the weekend with Africa Sports hosting Etoile Sahel of Tunisia.

The match marks a homecoming of sorts for former Ivorian international Ibrahim Kone, who left Africa Sports for Etoile Sahel.

Baladeyat Al Mahalla of Egypt are at home to Nigeria's Julius Berger in the other quarter-final, first leg tie.

Julius Berger have dropped Mufatu Ibrajhim, the competition's top scorer, from their squad for the trip to Egypt because he had skipped recent training sessions.

The return legs of all four ties will be played on the weekend of September 19-21.
