Accra, April 22, GNA - Ghana won a bronze medal at the just
ended African Juniors and Cadets Table Tennis Championship held
in Cairo, Egypt from 13th-17th April, 2009.
The medal was won by the cadet boys team event category
consisted of Samuel Akayade and Emmanuel Asante all from
Koforidua Secondary Technical School.
A statement signed by Kwame Amponfi Junior, General
Secretary of the Ghana Table Tennis Association, (GTTA) copied
to GNA Sports said the award winners which included the current
National Champion, Felix Lartey also gave a good account of
themselves by beating top ranked players in Africa to push Ghana's
Africa ranking from 9th to 7th out of 45 Table Tennis teams in
Africa. The General Secretary said the Cadet Girls team also emerged
sixth at the tourney competed by 14 countries. Amponfi Jnr explained that in the Juniors Singles African ranking
as at 6th April 2009, Ghana's current National Junior Boys
Champion, Felix Lartey of GIS ranks seventh whilst Comfort Adjoa
Ampah of Winneba Zion Senior High and Cynthia Kwabi of GIS
placed 17th and 18th respectively in Africa. In the Cadet Singles African ranking, Ghana's current Cadet
Champion Samuel Akayade of Koforidua Sec. Tech ranks fourth
while Dorothy Oboubi also of Winneba Zion Senior High School is
ranked 15th. Ghana's team to the Championship comprised Ebo Bartels the
GTTA Chairman, Kwame Amponfi Jnr,- Team Manager and
Secretary General of GTTA as well as Anthony Owusu-Ansah, the
GTTA Head Coach and Sports Council Regional Coach for Eastern
Region. The players are Abrefa Derek Tawiah, Lartey Felix, Kwabi
Cynthia all Junior Players from GIS, Accra; Philip Mensah-Junior
Player from Kwanyako Sec Tech, Akayade Samuel, Asante
Emmanuel and Gloria Asafo-Adjei, all Cadet Players from
Koforidua Sec Tech; Davies Isaac of Cape Coast Catholic Jubilee
School; Darbah Michael from Winneba A.M.E ZION Junior High
School and Oboubi Dorothy of Winneba A.M.E Zion Senior High
School.
