Ghanaian clubs need cash to compete in Africa - Nyantakyi

Kwasi Nyantakyi believes the lack of substantial financial resources puts Ghanaian clubs at a huge disadvantage in their struggle to excel in African-club competitions.

Once again, there is no Ghanaian club involved in the final qualifying round for the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Defending Ghana Premier League champions Asante Kotoko who were expected to build on the exploits made by Berekum Chelsea in their debut season in Africa crashed out of the competition against JSM Bejaia at the penultimate qualifying round.

New Edubiase who were making their first appearance in Confederations Cup by virtue of their FA Cup feat also crumbled at just the first hurdle of the competition.

This is a far-cry from what used to be the norm for especially the traditional clubs in Ghana.

Ghana FA boss Kwasi Nyantakyi strongly believes this is due to inferior resources of the local clubs as compared to their peers especially from Northern Africa, who have thoroughly dominated both the Champions League and Confederations Cup in recent times.

“You have to ask yourself why teams from Northern Africa do so well in the competition. It is simply because they have the money,” he told Ghanasoccernet.

“Let me give you a scenario; in case Wa All Stars wins the league and needs to represent Ghana in Africa, clearly we do not have the money to do so.

“Traveling to Tunisia to play a match there will be a huge challenge. But this is not the case for teams in Tunisia, Morocco and the like. They either have huge sponsorships or are supported by the state.

“In the past, Ghanaian clubs used to enjoy this kind of support and that is how come Accra Hearts of Oak were able to win the Champions League in 2000,” he said.

With no governmental and huge sponsorship for Ghanaian clubs in sight, it appears the woes of the local clubs in Africa will continue unabated.

“Berekum Chelsea did so well in the CAF Champions League last time but what did you see in the end? They had to sell almost all of their good players because they needed money to defray costs and keep the club running,” Nyantakyi added.

“When it comes to pure talent, no one can compete with Ghana but you need to back this with the money required to ensure these talents are well showcased and that is where we are lacking,” he said.
