Ghanaian duo of Christian Amoah and Forrester Osei starred at the just ended international weight-lifting championship held in Houston. The week-long international festival saw Forrester Osei breaking the national record in the senior category whiles 16-year-old Christian Amoah picked a respectable 29th ranking on the global stage. Russian Aleskey Lovchev won a treble of trophies with a gross lift of 475kg to break the previous records held by Iranian Razazadeh.

Forrester Osei gained an impressive 34th ranking on the international stage in the 94kg weight category. Osei broke Nii Tackie’s national record in the seniors in the clean and jerk with an impressive 155kg to set a new record in Ghana. The 26-year-old finished way off the podium but his impressive lifts earned him an enviable spot on the global ranking at the Houston tournament.

Compatriot, Christian Amoah warmed himself into the heart of the international weight-lifting fraternity at the 85kg category. The teen sensation defied the stage fright to finish a respectable 29th ahead of the much-fancied established stars in the sector. The budding star headed to the championship with very little international exposure but showed class and character to outmuscle his chasing pack in a keenly-contested podium finish in the junior category.

Technical director of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, Professor Kyle commended the competing athletes for raising high the flag of Ghana. He also called on young Christian Amoah to build upon his impressive debut world championship.

“That was an outstanding performance from the athletes. They performed extremely well at the championships. A 16-year-old competing on the world platform like this will be like a hero when he comes back to Ghana”, Professor Kyle said.
