Ghanaians don’t respect our talents – Charles Taylor speaks on Mbappe's historic unveiling

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko player, Charles Taylor Sampang, has expressed that the lack of respect for local players is a key reason why Ghanaian clubs struggle to organize grand unveiling ceremonies for their players.

He pointed out that many local players, despite their performances, are not celebrated enough, negatively impacting the league's quality.

Taylor mentioned that the kind of unveiling ceremony Real Madrid organized for Kylian Mbappe could be replicated in Ghana if local football talents were given the recognition and prestige they deserve.

“We don’t believe in our own talents. There are players we could give such grand unveilings, but we don’t. We don’t respect our talents because people think they can’t achieve what international players do. It’s only when a player goes abroad that they are considered good. We should let the kids know because I played better football than Mbappe’s current performance,” he said in Twi on Angel FM.

Taylor also reminisced about his unveiling in Kumasi after his surprising transfer from Accra Hearts of Oak to Asante Kotoko.

“The Kotoko fans were ecstatic about my signing. When we were heading to the stadium, seeing the fleet of vehicles with my pictures on them was amazing. I remember an old woman with a walking stick and her kids insisting on seeing me before leaving the venue. I was really shocked by the turn of events, and I think that’s what we need,” he recounted.
