A slight tweak in Mohammed Kudus’ trademark celebrations has spurred reactions on social media, with various interpretations being ascribed to it.
Kudus’ celebrations are often typified by sitting on the advertising panel or on a chair belonging to a steward.
However, in West Ham’s game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, December 21, 2024, the Ghanaian forward unleashed an improved version of the celebration after scoring the equalizer for West Ham.
Instead of the advertising panel or steward’s seat, Kudus sat on an elephant-shaped stool, obviously made in Ghana.
Disclosing the reason behind the new stool, Kudus said that he was paying homage to the country as the stool is a feature of Ghanaian society.
The forward was also happy to have played a key role in West Ham’s victory, stating that the point is a valuable one for the struggling side.
“I am happy to score; it is very important to help the team. The stool is from Ghana. I brought it from there. A lot of people do it, so I brought it to show where I come from. The chiefs sit on a stool, so that is why I sat on it. It is also meant to showcase my country’s culture,” he said in his post-match interview.
Despite Kudus’ explanation, Ghanaians on social media are reading meanings into it, with some ascribing political connotations to it.
Some Ghanaians believe that there is a connection between Kudus’ celebration and the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
