The GFA Spokesperson, Ibrahim Sannie Daara says the football governing body is still owed money by the headline sponsors of the Premier League, Globacom.
Daara, in an interview with Angel FM, revealed that Glo still wants to renew its sponsorship of the Premier League on reduced terms, despite its indebtedness, adding that so far, no company has indicated any preparedness to sponsor the League.
He disclosed: “As we stand now, Glo still owes us money and their contract with us has come to an end. We haven’t had any sponsor prepared to work with us, despite the fact that we have invited many companies. Glo is the only company prepared to sponsor us and they want to do so on reduced terms.”
Daara revealed that, rather than take a hard-line stance regarding the money owed it, the GFA would rather employ dialogue, tact and persuasion to retrieve the owed monies, appealing to Glo to pay up to alleviate the financial plight of Premier League clubs
“Our money is with them, so we will use tact and persuasion to retrieve our money from them, then we will know the next step to take. We would like to appeal to Glo to pay what they owe because many clubs are in debt and the clubs need the money to run their teams and buy players.
“We can go to court for our money, but the long process and expense involved, coupled with the fact that we have no sponsor means that we would rather dialogue to get the money, rather than embark on litigation.”
The GFA Spokesperson also told Angel FM that since the Premier League offers more exposure and mileage than the Black Stars, companies should take advantage and invest sponsorship into the Premier League.
“We think that the Premier League offers more exposure than the Black Stars because the Black Stars play only five times in a year, but the Premier league is discussed almost all the time, with all the commentaries and shows. That gives room for a lot of jingles and adverts to be played. So we would appeal to companies to take advantage of these opportunities and invest in our league.”
Daara further explained that the situation has left the GFA indebted to match referees, but expressed confidence that the knights of the whistle have understood the current situation.
“I am not sure that referees will go on strike because they are being owed. The truth is that the GFA has no money. If we had received the money from Glo, we would have paid the referees some money. We have spoken to them and explained our predicament. They have understood us, after we pleaded with them to have some patience with us.”
