Gov't to develop sports infrastructure in schools

Accra, Feb. 3, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufour has stressed the need for the nation to unearth sporting talents at a tender age if Ghana is to make a head way in the international competitive sporting field. He said the government is convinced that sports is within the ambit of education, hence school infrastructure and environment suitable for developing sporting talents will soon be provided to catch athletes in their prime youthful ages.
Speaking in his State of the Nation Address in the first Session of the Fourth Republican Parliament of Ghana, President Kufour said playing fields will be developed for all schools in order to make sports an integral part of school activities.
The President said government would also pursue vigorously its plan to upgrade community parks and other stadiums in the Districts and Regions through the collaboration of the Regional administrations and District Assemblies.
President Kufour said work would soon commence on the construction of two new stadiums in Tamale and Sekondi in pursuit of the nations' decision to host the Africa Nations Cup in 2008.
He said that the Accra and Kumasi stadiums would also be renovated and upgraded for the same competition.
