The Minister for Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Barbara Oteng Gyasi has revealed government’s commitment to develop the Tema Country Golf Club into a world-class standard.

The Tema Country Golf Club is one of the places which hosts latitude zero of the Greenwich Meridian line passes in Ghana aside from the Tema Harbor and the Greenwich Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

The golf course which was established shortly after Ghana gained its independence in 1957 serves as the country’s largest golf course.

Greenwich Meridian Line is what divides the world into two equal parts, East from West. The line passes through 10 countries namely; UK, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger and Ghana.

According to Oteng Gyasi, government is committed to fulfilling its promise to develop the Tema Country Golf Club into a world-class course.

“Government is desirous of designing a project around it to sell Ghana as the center of the World and this comprises supporting the Tema Golf Course, to develop it into an international standard, which can host international golf tournaments here in Ghana,” the Minister said after she teed off the Center of the World Golf tournament last Saturday.

The Minister also revealed that government is passionate about putting up structures and monuments to attract more tourists at the harbour as well as using the Presbyterian Church to serve as a religious pilgrimage.

She added, “We are also going to develop a religious aspect to the project which is the Presbyterian Church in Community 1 which will serve as a religious pilgrimage to tourists coming to Ghana. We are also going to build an iconic tower that you can identify with the country and finally develop a port for passenger cruise ships to come and see where the centre of the world is positioned in Ghana."

As part of its commitment to projecting Ghana as the Center of the World, the Ghana Tourism Development Council annually host the Center of the World Golf Tournament to draw more indigenous people and foreigners to the landmark.

This year's tournament which was themed 'The Year of Return' saw Teye Lartey and Isaac A. Mensah being crowned as winners in the Men’s Group A and B respectively.
