Government urged to promote disability sports

Kumasi, May 28, GNA - Abdul Aziz Mohammed, Secretary of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled, (GSPD) has called on Government to consider promoting and encouraging the establishment of disability sports in the country.

He said this would not only help to improve the physiological and health development of the disabled but would also create avenues for their socialization and recreation.

Speaking to the GNA Sports after an Inter-Regional wheelchair basketball competition in Kumasi at the week-end, Mr Mohammed said organizing sports programmes for people with disabilities was a challenge to the government and other corporate bodies concerned. Mr Mohammed said people with disabilities love sports because it is important as an integral to healthy living and therefore seeks to organize sports for its members with contributions from other organizations and institutions.

The Secretary who is also the Assistant Basketball Coach of Oseikrom Disabled Sports Club, (ODSC) said that the Club apart from organising the recent competition this year, has also organized a four-Regional Wheelchair Basketball tournament involving the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions last year. On national and international disabled games, Mr Mohammed said that many of them have the talent and potential to excel and realize develop their talents if they are given the needed equipment, facilities and proper coaching.

Mr Mohammed commended Areeba, Unique Trust, Ghana Social Club, =91Simple Man Art Works=92, Mr Ohene Karikari, the Ashanti Regional Development Officer of the National Sports Council, (NSC), Public Services Union and Jofel Catering Services and other organizations and institutions for their contributions towards the activities of the Club and called on other corporate and benevolent groups to come to their assistance.
