Grant should handle teams A and B, says chief

Avram Grant Avram Grant

The management committee chairman of the Black Stars, George Afriyie, has called for the senior team A side and the team B side to be handled by one coach.

The home-based side, managed by Black Stars deputy trainer Maxwell Konadu, failed to qualify for the 2016 African Nations Championship following a 2-2 aggregate draw with Cote d’Ivoire on Friday which saw the latter progress to the final tournament courtesy of the away goals rule.

“I think one coach should handle both teams. We used to practice that and I think it would be advisable for us to go back it,” Afriyie told Starr FM.

“You remember in 2009, Milo [Milovan Rajevac] handled both the local team and the Black Stars properly.

“I was one of those who wanted different coaches to handle the two teams separately.

“I was one of those who didn’t buy into the idea of [senior Team A coach Avram] Grant handling both teams,” Afriyie added.

“As the saying goes, it is a fool who doesn’t change his mind, so I think those calling on that [for Grant to lead both sides] have a case.

“It makes some sense. We have practiced a certain style and it has not worked so if we have to look into the future. Those who are making those arguments are right.”

The Black Stars would be absent for the first time in the history of the competition in 2016 since it was launched in 2009.
