Greater Accra Region emerge champions of National Sports Festival

Kumasi, June 27, GNA - Greater Accra Region won the overall championship trophy at the revived National Sports Festival which ended at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Saturday.

They bagged a total of 36 medals made up of 11 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze.

The Police Service took the second position with a total of 16 medals made up of 11 gold, three silver and two bronze while Prison Service placed third with 19 medals made up of eight gold, nine silver and two bronze.

Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) was fourth with seven gold, three silver and two bronze, Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) took the fifth position with six gold, five silver and four bronze with Immigration Service placing sixth with five gold, two silver and four bronze.

Ashanti Region came seventh with four gold, six silver and five bronze, Central Region followed with two gold, five silver and six bronze to take the eighth position with the Fire Service coming ninth with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

The 10th position was taken by Western Region who had one gold, five silver and three bronze medals with the Armed Forces placing 11th with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Northern Region took the 12th position with one gold, one silver and one bronze, Upper East Region was 13th with one gold and three bronze, Eastern Region 14th with two silver and three bronze, Volta Region placed 15th with one silver and two bronze, Upper West Region took the 16th position with two bronze and Brong-Ahafo Region placing 17th with one bronze medal.

Addressing the closing session, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports said that with the revival of the Festival it would now form the basis for the selection of sportsmen and women for future local and international competitions.

The Minister said as part of the realisation of this objective, the Sports College at Winneba will offer technical training and education to ensure that, "We produce sportsmen and women with the requisite technical knowledge and skills for the development of the various sporting disciplines".

"I therefore call on Chairmen of National Associations to co-operate and assist in this regard, notwithstanding any constraints with our developmental programmes, since the National Sports Festival must be sustained", he added. 27 June 04
