Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he once rejected an offer to use Black Magic charm to improve his goal-scoring form while playing in the juvenile football league.
The 29-year-old, who has now scored 43 goals in 90 games for the Black Stars, was responding to Guinea right-back Abdoulaye Cisse’s amulet that was caught by cameras during the AFCON 2015 quarter-final.
Cisse’s charm was exposed on live television when he had to change into a goalkeeper’s shirt because Naby Yattara had been sent off for a foul.
The widely held view is that Cisse wore the amulet to help him improve his performance in games for Guinea at the tournament, but Gyan stated that he does not believe in charms.
“There are people who believe in those things and for me I don’t believe in it but it exists though. When I was at the colt’s level, he was like take this (charm) and you are going to score more but I said I am a natural goal scorer so no need,” Gyan told Starr FM.
Despite scoring just once at the 2015 AFCON, Asamoah Gyan equaled Osei Kofi’s record of 7 Nations Cup goals during the competition and has so far won three goal-king awards since joining Al Ain in the UAE Pro League.
