Gyan gives $13,000 to '65 Afcon team

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has donated GHC50, 000 ($13,000) to Ghana’s 1965 Cup of Nations winning team.

The Shanghai SIPG attacker made the donation during a fundraising dinner at the Sunlodge hotel in Accra on Thursday.

Gyan bought an auctioned picture of the group at $13,000 to help support the ex-footballers.

The dinner which formed part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the 1965 Cup of Nations winning also saw some individuals making donations to the ex-players.

Mr.Osei Kwame Despite, owner of the Despite Group of companies together with his colleague Dr. Ofori Sarpong also coughed out an amount of GHC 80,000 ($21,000) to the team.

Mr. Prosper Appiah, CEO of electrical appliance company Prolux also gave out GHC51,000 to support the former players.

Kennedy Agyapong of the Kenpong Travel and Tours also gave out GHC20,000.

Pastor Kobby, founder of the Royal church international also donated $10,000 and promised an additional $20,000 at the end of every year till the last man of the Group passes on.

NPP Presidential aspirant Nana Akuffo Addo also contributed GHC25,000 to support the group.

Several bigwig personalities including Mac Dan of the Dan-DEVAN Shipping company, Nana Ofosu Ayeh, father of Black Stars defender Phil Ofosu Ayer etc also made donations and pledges to support the team.

The event also saw Ghana international Prince Tagoe also pledging an undisclosed amount of money to the team.

This year marks exactly 50 years when the Black Stars won their second Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia.

A football match between Asante Kotoko and Ghana’s 1992 silver winning team was organized to climax the occasion at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.
