Asamoah Gyan is now a goal away from a record-breaking 50th goal for Ghana, having scored his 49th against the Eagles of Mali when the two countries clashed on Saturday at the 31st edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

A brilliant cross by Jordan Ayew was well connected by the skipper to hand the Stars a second successive result at the competition.

“This is my 49th goal for the national team and for me this is a massive landmark. I am now only a goal away from my 50th for the national team and I hope to get that before the end of the tournament.

Gyan has now scored in six successive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, having scored in Ghana 2008, Angola 2010, Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012, South Africa 2013, and Equatorial Guinea 2015.

“I am also happy to have now scored a goal in the last six Africa Cup on Nations as I am told this is the first ever time a player has done that, so I am proud about that as well. I hope to score more goals for Ghana and hope to continue playing for as long as I can for my country,” he disclosed to Class Sports’ Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang.
