Gyan to join Sunderland

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan is poised to join Sunderland from French club Rennes.

The website of Ouest France newspaper says Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti announced after Tuesday's training session that Gyan will leave the club in a deal that could rise to 14 million ($17.8 million).

The 24-year-old Gyan had a chance to make history at the World Cup but missed his last-minute penalty kick in a tense quarterfinal match against Uruguay. Ghana would have been the first African team to reach the semifinals.

Gyan scored 13 league goals in 27 starts for Rennes last season, and he would give Sunderland manager Steve Bruce a daunting-looking attack alongside England striker Darren Bent.
