Gyan to miss Ghana’s double-header

Ghana are likely to miss their captain Asamoah Gyan for this month's back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mozambique because of injury.

The Black Stars technical team is fretting over the fitness status of the China-based captain after his injury while playing for his club.

The Shanghai SIPG attacker suffered the setback in their opening Asian Champions League clash with Melbourne Victory in Australia, which they lost 2-1.

The thigh injury prevented him from playing in the Chinese league's season opener over the weekend which has raised worries for the Ghana team.

The Black Stars take on the Mambas on 24 March before travelling to Maputo three days later for the return leg.

Ghana must inform Gyan's club of his invitation two weeks before the match, the GFA should have informed the Chinese club of the invitation last week.

Only firm medical assurances can help Ghana coach Avram Grant to invite his important captain but the current uncertainty could lead to the striker's exclusion if the Chinese club are reluctant.

Gyan’s career with Chinese club Shanghai SIPG has been hit with injuries and he has failed to score for the club since August 17.

The last time Gyan failed to play for the Black Stars due to an injury he picked up at club side was in the game against Comoro Island in the 2018 World Cup qualifier in the second preliminary round.
