Bernard Dong Bortey's trial with an Israeli club was abruptly ended and the player sent back to Ghana in disgrace. The player stole a watch and an unspecified amount of money from the players? locker room
The Hearts of oak ace almost implicated defender John Painstil, a regular with the same club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, in the crime. This is because he hid the stolen items in Painstil's car without his knowledge.
The "master thief" got into the locker room and moved the stuff to Painstil's car. On the players return, someone who saw him said he was in and out of Painstils car and a small search was done on the car where all the stolen items were found.
Bortey initially refused to confess to the crime, but was tricked into admitting. He only confessed after John lied to him that he was recorded on the locker room's security camera. Painstil was very upset and says he brought a big shame to the entire Ghanaian community in Israel.
Bortey could have been handed over to the police, but Painstil got involved and pleaded on his behalf. He was sent to "Ogyakrom" on the next available flight.
Bernard Dong Bortey was in Israel for just about a week. An Israeli newspaper has collaborated the story.
