Hearts win SWAG team of the Year Award

Accra, Feb. 6, GNA - The Sportswriters Association of Ghana (SWAG) has named Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club as the 2004 Team of the Year.

This was stated in a Press Release signed and issued By Maurice Quansah, Assistant Secretary of SWAG in Accra on Sunday copied to the prestigious awards, SWAG recognised the club's historic feat in winning the Confederation of African Football's novelty Confederation Cup after beating Kumasi Asante Kotoko in an all-Ghanaian final".

It said the significance of Hearts' historic achievement was further evident when CAF nominated the club alongside Enyimba of Nigeria and Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia for the African Club of the Year award to be announced in South Africa next week.

Some of the Award winners announced by SWAG include Ms Olivia Lartey of the National Fire Service as the 2004 Female Hockey Star with Ebenezer Frimpong of CEPS winning the 2004 Male Hockey Star award.

Former national tennis star, Peter Annan has also been named as a recipient of a Special Award in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the development and promotion of Ghana tennis for more than two decades as a player, official and a philanthropist.

Holland-based long jumper, Ignatius Gaisah tops the list of award winners, for winning the prestigious SWAG Sports Personality of the Year for the second year running.

SWAG will in all confer honours on 17 individuals in the competitive category, with six Special Awards to distinguished individuals and institutions for their contribution to the development and promotion of sports.
