President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah and President of Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Mr Herbert Mensah have donated to the Senior women team, the Black Queens ahead of their Tokyo 2020 qualifiers against Kanya.
The former Asante Kotoko chairman was with his old time friend, Ben Nunoo Mensah at Mariset Plaza Hotel, Osu, to do the presentation to the team.
Some of the items donated to the Queens were water, soft drinks, mosquito coil, Yazz washing powder, sanitary pads and an undisclosed amount of money at their camping base in Osu to boost their preparation for the Tokyo 2020 qualifiers.
According to the GOC President, the donation was aimed at promoting and motivating the team ahead of the Olympic games qualifiers.
“As you know, the Black Queens are playing Olympic qualifiers and I happened to be the president of Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), so I said to myself, whatever I can do to help them to qualify, I will do”
“When I heard they were in camp, and some of us that we are into so called least Finance sports, we know the challenges and the things that you go through when you are in camp,” he stated.
“Mercy Tagoe is my good sister, so when I spoke to her on Thursday and she told me they are in camp for an Olympic qualifier I called some of the federation heads and Ghana Rugby Football Union President, Mr. Herbert Mensah said, he will help to get some items on behalf of the federations.”
“We have to admit that our football has a problem. But I am pleading with those aspirants who used to do big donations during funerals. They should also pay attention to our Olympic teams, that is Black Queens and Black Meteors. They should speak to Coach Ibrahim Tanko and Madam Mercy Tagoe for them to tell you the challenges.”
“This is the time Ghana football need their support. If these two teams qualify to the Olympics games, it will help to sell our football,” he said.
The captain of Black Queens, Priscilla Okyere expressed her appreciation to the GOC and Ghana Rugby Football Union team, stating that, the donation will go a long way to help the team. She added "I pray both of us Black Queens and Ghana Rugby team will qualify for the Olympic Games."
She also pleaded with other cooperate bodies and Institutions come into their aid.
The Black Queens have advanced to the next stage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Qualifiers after easing past the les Panthers of Gabon 5-0 on aggregate.
The female senior team of Ghana have been in camp for the past three weeks preparing for the qualifier against their counterparts from Kenya.
The first leg is scheduled to be played at Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, October 4 with the second leg in Kenya a week after the first leg.
