Historic: Ghanaians celebrate 10 years of U-20 World Cup victory

Ghana is the only African country with a world u-20 title Ghana is the only African country with a world u-20 title

Where were you when that Agyemang Badu penalty touched the net and how did you celebrate it?

Ran to the street to party with other excited Ghanaians? Bounced up and down in your hall, sang songs of praises to God for the victory or took a bit of liquor to share in the moment?

Well, whichever way you chose to celebrate, it has been ten years since you did that.

Yes, exactly ten years ago today, coach Sellas Tetteh led a bunch of young and ambitious players to achieve arguably the greatest feat by an African country in the last fifteen years.

The Black Satellites of Ghana stunned favourites Brazil and the world to win Africa its first under-20 World title.

Winning a World Cup is always a great feeling but the manner in which the Satellites won the trophy in 2009 made the victory more memorable.

From the 37th minute to the last minute of extra time Ghana had to play with 10 men against a superior Brazilian side that had tasted no defeat until the final.

But Andre Ayew and his players never gave up, they dug deep, played their hearts out to send the game to penalties.

The opportunity to win Ghana and Africa their first World Cup fell on Agyemang Badu after Texeira’s kick was saved by goalkeeper Daniel Agyei.

As the young Badu took steps to take that historic penalty, the commentator kept shouting, is it going to be Africa, is it going to be Africa?

The pressure from both Ghanaians and the African at the stadium was massive but Badu did not crack. He calmly scored to give Africa its first and so far only world title at the u-20 level.

It has been ten years since that happened and some Ghanaians on social media are marking it.
