Hockey: Financiers Lift Louis Tengey Cup

The four senior teams in the GREATER ACCRA HOCKEY ASSOCIATION League went head-to-head to determine who wins the maiden LOUIS TENGEY TOURNAMENT played at the National Hockey Pitch on Saturday 19th April 2008.

Senior League champions Multistix, determined to pick the trophy donated by their own Louis Tengey, had their image dented in their first match when they were beaten by a goal to nil by their arch rivals NDK Financiers Hockey Club. Financiers proved invincible on the day with a solitary goal scored by enterprising Ebow Newton who cleverly beat chipped over on-rushing Multi goalkeeper Jonas Tetteh.

In the second match, underdogs Veterans Hockey Club upset their arch rivals Citizens Hockey Club by a lone goal scored by Andy Sam. The win gave Veterans high hopes of causing a major upset in the tournament.

The third match saw Citizens put up what one can term as a fantastic display of hockey only to be beaten by super Multistix by two goals to one. Citizens took the lead with a classic goal by Oxford Attipoe, after which Multistix came back with two great goals by Ato Hagan and Seth Bimpong from penalty corners.

The fourth game saw Financiers denting the hopes of Veterans who they beat by two goals to nil with goals from Richmond Attipoe after a solo effort and the second by Nii Kpani Addy who made light work of the Veterans goalie.

Multistix came back redeeming their image in their third match humiliating Veterans by four goals to nil and hoped that the final match between Financiers and Citizens would be won by Citizens who have the knack for beating Financiers during crucial matches.

The final match of the day saw Citizens having their hopes dashed when they were heavily trashed by four goals to nil by a determined and purposeful 10-man Financiers. Financiers lost their kingpin Emmanuel Ahadjie early in the first half for dissent after the umpire had whistled for a penalty stroke. The penalty stroke which was taken by Samuel Ofosu was eventually saved by Financier’s keeper Solomon Amponsah. Richmond Attipoe led the scoring with two goals with other goals from Henry Fynn and Ebo Arthur.

At the end of the tournament, Mr. and Mrs. Tengey thanked all the clubs for honoring the invitation and celebrating the special occasion with them. They jointly presented the trophy to the winners NDK Financiers and invited all the clubs to join them for some drinks and lunch.
