When Wesley Sneijder made the move from Real Madrid to Inter Milan in 2009, it was a transfer that raised many eyebrows.

However, behind the scenes, it wasn’t just a change of clubs; it was the result of a masterstroke in persuasion by none other than José Mourinho.

The Special One worked his magic to bring the Dutch playmaker to the Italian giants, convincing him to turn down multiple offers.

Sneijder had joined Madrid in 2007 as one of the brightest talents in European football following an impressive spell with Ajax.

However, his time at the club was hindered by managerial changes, intense competition for spots, and high expectations.

Despite some standout performances, particularly in his first season, where he contributed several important goals, Sneijder was often relegated to a supporting role rather than becoming the main man.

With the risk of an underwhelming stint at Madrid overshadowing his career, Mourinho made a move for the Dutchman that would define his career in Italy.

In an interview with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Sneijder shared how the iconic manager convinced him to make the bold switch, with Mourinho’s words and vision for his role playing a pivotal part in his decision.

“He was calling me directly, and he really convinced me. He said, ‘We have a strong team, but the missing part is a number ten, and I really see you as the number ten in my team. If you come, my team is complete, and we can win everything,’” Sneijder recalled.

Mourinho stayed true to his words, guiding Sneijder and Inter to an unprecedented treble, winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia, and the Champions League in the 2009/10 season.

Sneijder’s performances, coupled with his exploits at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where the Netherlands finished as runners-up, earned him fourth place on the Ballon d'Or podium.
