Ghana’s all-time top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, has revealed that his GH₵250 signing-on fee from Liberty Professionals was enough to satisfy his personal needs and immediately changed his life.

Asamoah Gyan, who joined Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League in 2004 from the colts team, Stay Cool FC, was signed for GH₵500, a substantial amount at the time.

According to Gyan, although that amount of money seems small in today's context, it was sufficient to meet his immediate needs and opened doors for him.

In an interview monitored by GhanaWeb, Gyan recalled that the Dansoman-based club only paid him half of his signing-on fee but he managed to use it wisely.

The former player noted that he used part of the money to repair his brother, Baffour Gyan’s broken car and still had enough for his upkeep.

“Liberty signed me for GH₵500 but paid me GH₵250. I always tell them they owe me now.

“This GH₵250, my brother had one of his old cars and he didn’t want me to drive it at that time. One of his cars was a bit faulty, so I took GH₵100 and went to Abossey Okai to buy a new engine. I paid the mechanics GH₵50 and with the remaining GH₵100, I felt like a rich man,” Gyan said in the interview on YFM.

After a short spell with Liberty Professionals, Gyan joined Udinese and saw his earnings increase from a monthly salary of GH₵100 to 3,700 euros in 2005.
