Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko and Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee George Amoako says he did not influence the decision of Kotoko's hierarchy to sack CK Akunnor from his post weeks before the club's Africa Champions League campaign in 2019.
CK Akunnor left the Porcupines after refusing to accept the technical director position role which was offered him. He was replaced by Norwegian Kjetil Zachariassen who at the time was the head coach of Ashantigold SC.
Barely a day after CK Akunnor’s appointment as coach of the senior male national team Black Stars, there have been concerns about the relationship between him and George Amoako. The Kotoko CEO has however refuted the supposed rift between him and his former employee.
"It is never true I influenced the decision in sacking CK Akunnor at Asante Kotoko," he said on Angel FM.
"I have been reading on various social media platforms concerning this. Let me be honest with you, we are on a different level and different mission, the most important thing is the task ahead of us as new Black stars management committee to achieve the aim in winning trophies with the Black stars.”
Meanwhile, vociferous sports journalist Countryman Songo has asserted that CK Akunnor is currently among an impressive list of ex-players who have successfully transitioned from footballers to technical men and is capable of leading the national team.
“CK has played football at the highest level, captained the Black Stars and played in the Bundesliga where he captained Wolfsburg. Someone who has played Black Stars, coach Kotoko and Hearts with all this pressure. He has seen something and I believe that he is still learning”.
In his interview with GhanaWeb, Songo also rallied support for Akunnor, stressing that he can only achieve the targets set for him if the FA and the country offer him the right support.
He added that Kwesi Appiah is not a better coach than Akunnor and with the right support he will end Ghana’s wait for an AFCON title.
“Akwasi Appiah we gave him support and I don’t see him as better than CK, Maxwell and Tanko. It doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a coach. He was coaching us and has even coached us at the World Cup but enough is enough so we are done with him. But look at the support we gave to him. Why don’t we give Akunnor the same support? It’s all about support,” the ‘fireman’ said.
