I don't understand why people fight over captaincy in Black Stars - Richard Kingson

Former Wigan goalkeeper Richard Kingson expressed his worry at the numerous fights by players over who should wear the armband in the Black Stars.

Kingson, who captained the senior national team in the 2010 AFCON tournament went on to say that it is just a differentiation from one player to the other and the captains do not receive more money than any other player in the team.

“Sometimes I feel bad and I say ‘why are you fighting on this?’ It is just to differentiate you from us. It is the performance that matters. You can be the captain and sit on the bench," he told Nathaniel Attoh on Joy Sports Link.

"With this captain’s armband, you don’t take more than anybody [in the Black Stars] in terms of salary and winning bonus. I don’t see the reason why people fight over it. It causes destruction.”

He was asked about how Stephen Appiah got the captaincy even when he was the senior player and he revealed that he offered his support to the former Juventus man.

“We were having a meeting and Appiah was called as a captain and he got up and told them that, I should be the captain because I was the most senior player and I tapped him and said that I will support him.”
