Ex-Black Stars player Laryea Kingston has opened up on how he had to resort to an unconventional style of injury management in order to play some matches at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Laryea, one of Ghana’s stars of the tournament picked up an injury during the tournament but had to play through it due to his determination to make the ‘host and win’ dream a reality.
In the quarter-final match against Nigeria, Laryea starred and was instrumental in the famous 2-1 victory over the Eagles.
It has been some twelve years since the tournament was played and Laryea has revealed playing through injury.
He told Joy Sports that he had to put uncooked meat on his ankle to enable him play some of the matches.
“During that tournament, I had an injury when I broke a bone. I got injured during the tournament and that’s why I miss the sem-final. So at that time, I had to put raw meat on my on foot and put on my socks before wearing my boot. So when I played against Nigeria, I was injured. We used to have a physio at Hearts who thought me that”, he said.
Laryea’s absence against Cameroon proved costly as a late Nkong goal ended the country’s trophy dreams.
