I’ll fix broken stadia – Nii Lante

Minister of Youth and Sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye has promised to fix the deteriorating sports stadia in the country.

The country’s four main stadia in Kumasi, Essipong, Accra, and Tamale, constructed for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana have been left in bad shape.

Although the stadia are used for league matches and international games, lack of maintenance has rendered the facilities weak, with the washrooms unusable and fears that a major disaster could result if any of them is filled to capacity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed 15,000-capacity Cape Coast Stadium Tuesday May 3, Mr Vanderpuye said the four stadia will be renovated.

He said: “I know Ghanaians will be worried this day when we are commissioning this stadium because of the way the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority have allowed the earlier ones in Kumasi, Accra, Essipong, and Tamale to deteriorate.

“I stand here today to assure the whole country and in doing so…we are not only going to manage this facility well, but we will fix all the others that have gone bad.”
