A former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe says he is considering contesting the 2019 GFA presidential elections. Dismissed Vice President of the GFA, George Afriyie and Nana Yaw Amponsah have already declared their intentions to vie for the position which will be up for grabs in 2019 and Fred Pappoe is considering throwing his hat in the ring.
Fred Pappoe intimated in an interview with GhanaWeb TV that he has been approached by certain personalities within the football fraternity to vie for the position and that he will make a decision after consulting some ‘kingmakers’ in the country.
Pappoe expressed that Ghana football needs a ‘Messiah’ who will come and save it from its impending death and he is the right person to lead the charge.
“I will be telling a lie if I said I’m not considering it. Because a lot of people have made so many representations to me. We all owe it to our game and followers of game both closely and far to salvage the game. If some of us can contribute towards that, why not. We cannot sit back and allow the game to slide down. There are a lot of areas which require change. The starting point is that we should try to repair a certain culture of sycophancy and lack of openness and truthfulness at the top hierarchy of our game”, Fred Pappoe said on Sports Check.
Pappoe was deputy to Kwesi Nyantakyi during his first term and was also chairman of the Black Stars management committee. Fred Pappoe reigned from 2005 to 2011, a period that witnessed remarkable success in Ghana’s football.
As the chairman of the Black Stars Management Team, Fred Pappoe led Ghana to its maiden World Cup, beating The United States and Czech Republic to finish second in a group that was tagged “group of death”. The national under-20 team also won the FIFA Youth World Cup in 2009.
