Legendary Ghanaian boxer Joseph Agbeko has expressed concerns about how the government has neglected boxing, leading to its lack of development in the country.

He explained that the government's primary focus has been on football, especially the Black Stars, investing huge funds to ensure the players are satisfied to play for the team.

Agbeko noted that even though he supports the Black Stars during various competitions and qualifiers, sometimes he wishes the team lose their matches to discourage the government from funding them and look at other sporting activities.

“I support the Black Stars, but sometimes I wish they would lose because the government only cares about football. They don’t care about boxing and other sports, so it makes it hard for me to even wish the team well.

"I can support the Black Stars, but at the same time, I don’t want them to progress because once they win, the government will continue spending more money on the team,” the legendary boxer said, as quoted by happyghana.com.

His comment comes as the Black Stars prepare to take on Sudan in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) return leg after drawing at home.

The must-win game will take place in Libya on October 15, 2024.
