Ghana football legend and former captain of the Black Stars, Abedi Ayew Pele, says he always believed and saw himself as a better player than most of his playing mates, particularly Ruud Gulit and Marco Van Basten.
According to the three time African player of the year, what motivated him to stand tall among his playing colleagues was the mentality he had that made him felt he was better than some great players, which urged him to play to win laurels for himself and his team.
“Well I don’t know but I had it in mind that I am better than Gulit and I’m also better than Van Bastern and the others. So coming onto the pitch, it is in my mind that there must be a challenge between Gulit and Abedi Pele who is going to win,” he said on GTV sports+ ‘TIME WITH THE CAPTAINS’ show on Sunday, May 31.
Born in Kibi in the Eastern region of Ghana, maestro Abedi Ayew Pele started his football career at Real Tamale United 1980 to 1982 before joining Al sadd, FC Zurich, Dragons l’Oueme but had to return to Real Tamale United after spending three years playing overseas.
The Nania FC President also had stints with many other clubs such as Niort, Mulhouse, Marseille, Lyon, Torino, 1860 Munich and finally ended his glittering career at Al Ain in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in the 2000 with a total club career appearances of 479 and scoring 157 goals and 73 National appearances with 33 goals.
