Former Asante Kotoko defender, Awal Mohammed has disclosed that he was paid a meagre salary during his days in the Ghana Premier League with the Porcupines Warriors.

The player disclosed that he earned GH₵500 as monthly salary during his tenure with Asante Kotoko in 2010.

Despite the low salary, Awal Mohammed managed to live comfortably.

“Nowadays, salaries are much improved. Back then, I was only making GH₵500 at Kotoko. Supporters should turn up to back the team now, regardless of players’ salaries,” he told Ghanasportspage.com.

“I didn’t lack anything because I was a Kumasi boy, I didn’t buy anything with the salary I was taking at Kotoko. Upon all the salary I was receiving I was still going home to eat and other stuff because you can’t do anything with the GH₵500.”

Mohammed Awal played for WAFA and had a short tenure with Ivory Coast's ASEC Mimosas. In 2012, he joined South African club Maritzburg United.

Mohammed Awal later returned to Asante Kotoko for the 2016/17 season to win the President Cup and the FA Cup. He is currently a free agent after spells in the Arabian league.
