Reigning IBF World Lightweight champion, Richard Commey has attributed his victory over Isa Chaniev to hard work and also to an act of divinity.
Richard Commey who was having a second shot at the title wasted no time in the ring as he handed his opponent a round 2 knockout to become Ghana’s ninth World title holder.
Speaking to the press on his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Commey acknowledged the support of his manager and other people who play diverse roles in his journey to the top.
Commey credited God for his victory and also mentioned that the title is a reward for his hard work, perseverance and determination.
“I’m very excited. It is what it is and I’m glad that God has granted us another world title. It’s very unfortunate that Dogboe lost his but I thank God for giving us another title. I worked so hard for this and I thank everyone who supported me. My manager told me from day one that he was going to make a world champion and through hard work, through thin and thick. I’m now a world champion and I thank God for this”.
“I thank the media who have followed me since I started. I thank you and God bless everyone. This is not going to be the first or the last but it’s gonna continue. I’m gonna make sure we get more world champions from this country, he said.
The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Perry Okudzeto who led the government delegation that welcomed the boxer congratulated him for making the nation proud and urged him to train harder for his next bout.
The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority argued that Commey’s success provides another reason for one to conclude that boxing is the nation’s premier sport.
Commey is expected to visit the President, Nana Akufo-Addo and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah in the coming days.
